Oscar freeked out?

Postby usmma1 on Wed May 01, 2002 10:29 am

I usually feed my Oscar a dozen goldfish at a time. I tried to feed him 2 dozen this time. He ate three or four as they dropped into the tank and then swam around with them for a day or so. I poured the store water into the tank and apparently messed up the pH and ammonia. I restored the pH to 7.0 and have been doing water changes to lower the ammonia (currently in the 6 to 7 range) He looks like he is feeling better, but he refuses to eat the fish. I took them out of the tank but when I try to put one or two in the tank he just swims around and looks at them. What should I do, my Oscar isnt eating? ps. I know not to pour the store water in anymore, I just need to know what to do from here. Thanks
Oh ya, he is in a 55 gallon tank with a red devil a green terror and a giant dannio(sp?) Everyone says that he should eat those fish, but my Oscar doesnt bother them

no white dots, no ick, no eye problems, no swelling, no change in coloration. I feed pellets 80% of the time and maybe once every other week or so I give him live fish. I am just interested to know if he will ever eat live fish or not. I have been doing partial water changeouts the past three days. I am just wondering why he doesnt eat the live fish.

55g is way too small for that many fish
Red Devil will probably end up killing every thing, especially if its a male.
Sounds like a good thing he wont eat feeders.
They are bad news and more trouble than they are worth.

This forum has a lot of "No Feeder Nazis" (myself included)
Beleive me,we have heard all this sorta stuff before from people who refuse to beleive.
We convert a lot of them and others find out the hard way in the end.
Heres an extract from Adams oscar basic care page.

How many feeder fish can I feed my Oscar? - TOP

A Absolutely none, zip, zero, zilch, just forget about it. Feeders are not an adequate source of nutrition and have been link with HITH in long term feeding. They are also cesspools of disease, and commonly contaminate fish with Ich, and fungus, as well as leaches, gill flukes and various other bacterial diseases.

I do hope this post is geniune and not just to aggravate members. Feeder fish and too many fish in a tank are not good ideas.
