120 gal tank killing everything

Uh-oh, that sounds very, very bad. I'm so sorry for you and all the fish that have died Image

Now I'm just desperately trying to think of some possible reasons for this desaster. Let's go through again:

If you have replaced filters and heaters and everything that needs electrical power, it probably can't be an electrical current. My husband has a thing called ampere-meter to check for electrical currents, it is used by electricians. Do you know anyone who may have one?

Else I'd think it must be something highly toxic.

Have you replaced all the water since you took the crushed coral out? If not, could it be that the toxins that may have come from the coral or were just lying dormant in the ground were stirred up when you removed it, causing things to worsen?

Did you treat your fish with copper in the last weeks or even months? Did you mix different medications? BTW, how long has the tank been running? Maybe you posted it, but I couldn't find out. And what exactly is a power surge (I don't know the word surge)?

If you have done a 100% water change or several really big water changes since then, I'd think it wasn't in the coral.

Is the tank all-glass? If not and it is an older tank, could it be something dissolving from the frame due to age, perhaps something metallical (which would be toxic)?

If it's not the tank itself, it can still be something in the water or in the air that is pumped into the tank.

Have you done water changes to your other tanks since the fish in this tank got sick? If yes, it can't be the tap water either, since the others are doing well.

Is the tank in the same room as the others are? If not, have you recently used pestizides, herbizides or any kind of spray? Do you have used a new pan or fondue set or anything containing teflon? A new floor? Anything new?

If the other tanks are in the same room, it shouldn't be anything in the air.

And now I run out of ideas. Perhaps anybody else has a better idea.

If you simply can't find any (other) possible reason, I'd empty the tank completely and set it up new. Perhaps desinfect it before. It wouldn't make no sense to put fish into it just to see them die.

Sorry, no miracle ...

120 gal tank killing everything

no pesticides, all tanks in same room. but since the first of this writing i realized their was one heater i did not replace. i have taken it out and put 7 more goldfish in 3 hrs ago.......fingers still cross. the heater was bought and i have used for 2 months from bigal's. a power surge is a unit that is supposed to protect against faulty equiptment or emergency. where you plug all the cords into it. like on your computer. i am sure there is a better explaination, but haven't slept in a while. thanks for covering all bases with me and hope i have better news. i have just never seen anything like it in 16 years of keeping fish. i have seen plucos and goldfish live without filter, air ect. that's why i know i have a serious prob. thanks again Gisela.

Oh, hopefully it was the heater. It would be the easiest explanation and the easiest problem to get rid of.

Three hours of surviving is not too far from four hours, so I think I can calm down a bit. I got really excited when I read your post. Have never seen that, either (knock on wood).

Your store will love you for buying all the goldfish ...

Thanks for the explanation of a power surge. Glad you had one if it really was the heater.

Good luck!

all those poor fish and my fronts. for a heater that was on a surge protector. well i think that was it because it's been 4 hours. but i am going to wait till tommorrow to put the angelfish and silver dollar in then by night the 3 o's will have a safe home. i just didn't think to change it because it was going on and off and keeping water temp. it's been a sad 3 days.
i don't know what it is with heaters and me. we just took 3 back to store today that cracked

I sure hope someone out there knows the answer because I had the same problem. It was a tank I used for quarantine. All of the fish died within hours with no visible signs of illness.

yeah, it looks as though it was the heater from bigal's. since sunday morning all o's and silver dollar, angelfish and one plucos are very happy. but so sad. the 2 fronts will be going into the 55 gal today or tommorrow. pat, i put a lot of plants in the 120 for the o's and they have so much fun going through all of them but they are only about 4 in, so things might change as they get older. but looks good. not as good as all the caves i had in it when it was a frontosa tank :( thanks everybody

how long has your tank been up and running. sorry to hear about all of the fish lost to a faulty heater but you might want to float a thermometer in the tank and monitor your temp for a couple of days to make sure that your temp stays at a consistent temperature.

thnnk you both, but this is an old post, i think almost a month old and if you had read my last post i found the problem which was a heater that was shorted and not plugged into a power surge
