parasites????

Postby jason_912 on Tue Jan 01, 2002 12:42 pm

I am so confused about what is happening in my 30 gal. tank. I have small white dots that are attached to the inside of the tank, on all sides. They appear to be moving too, I am really not sure how to describe what it looks like, except for anyone who has ever seen bacteria under a microscope. The tank has three african cichlids in it. Penguin 300 filter. Ph 7.0. Any suggestions???

parasites????

I have seen bacteria under the microscope, if that helps at all . . .But bacteria is usually too small to be seen with the naked eye, so I doubt that it is bacteria related as you can visably see it.
Start by raising the temp to 80, add aquarium salt, and treat with a parasite med such as coppersafe.

I'm not firmiliar with what bacteria looks like under a microscope but I have seen quite a few single sell animals... are they free form like an ameba? Do they look like small snails perhaps? Are they attacking your fish, or causing your fish stress in some way?

I went to the LFS and picked up some copper safe and added it to the tank. The guy at the store said that they sounded like they were anchor worms and they could be treated in 3-4 days. I'll see what happens. Thanks for the suggestions.

I have those too. They aren't anchor worms or bacteria but you could certainly get rid of them with coppersafe if they are bothering you. They aren't harmful to the fish, the population will fluctuate based on the amount of organic matter you leave sitting around in the tank.If I see a lot of them I just clean the tank and they go away, I've never had a huge population though.
