PH...How important is it?

Postby TigerO'sRule on Thu Jan 17, 2002 3:44 pm

Thoguth I would get a discussion going.

How important do you think keeping your ph at 8.3 in a reef tank is?

My personal opinion for most corals is that keeping a CONSTANT ph around 7.8-8.3 (ex. keep it at 7.8 CONSTANTLY not going up and down trying to get it right at 8.3) I know for some corals it requires a really good ph. But as a rule for me I just try to keep it constant and don't let it move around much and this involves keeping it on a steady schedule with buffers and other supplements....ect.

I'd like to hear other opinions and get an idea of what people think on the subject as mine tends to stay a little low.....around 7.9-8.0

Well my tank runs pretty regularly at 8.0, and I havent really noticed it fluctuate too much. I am pretty regular with my buffers and additives. I think your probably right though a constant unchanging enviroment is more important then a "ideal" one.

While we are on the topic of water parameters what do you keep your salinity at? I try and keep mine at 1.025-26.

Yeah adam that's what I keep mine at. I've heard of people going clear to 1.028....haven't went that high yet.

I dont see any benifits to running up at 1.028... natural sea water runs about 1.026-1.027... but have never heard of concentrations being that high in nature... and since most of the animals we put in the tank are wild captured I think it is best to duplicate their conditions as closely as possible... that is just me though.
