Breeding Jewel Cichlids

Getting them to tango...

Breeding Jewel Cichlids

Postby avrobinson on Mon Apr 15, 2002 4:59 pm

I hope someone out there can help me.....I have a 37 gallon tank with 1)a jack dempsey, 2) bloody parrot cichlid, and 3)four jewel cichlids, two of which are a mated pair. The pair has laid eggs before, which have successfully hatched. I ran into the problem when I tried to move the babies (about 30) into a 20 gallon tank. I lost every last one of them. Can someone guide me through the proper procedures (step by step) so I will be ready the next time this happens? (I would have left the babies in the tank with the other fish except I was leaving the light on - for the parents to see and take care of them - and soon have massive algae buildup. Any help would be greatly appreciated......

Thanks,

Hi there,
I have never bred jewel cichlids but i will try and help you, Could have been a number of things that killed your fry, PH shock, Shock of being moved, lack of food etc etc, how old where they when you moved them? how did you move them? did you check the PH in both tanks? what are you feeding the fry??
I think the best approach would be to move the pair into the 20g alone,, I beleive jewels dont get very big and a 20g should be plenty for a breeding pair, Also you have a alot of fish in the 37, you may want to get rid of the jack as he will need a much bigger tank when full grown.
