Getting them to tango...

After they breed

Postby ryan1980 on Sun Mar 10, 2002 12:27 am

Wondering what you guys do with all the babie after they hatch. I plan to breed my oscars but Ill need to raise the until they are 1"-2" inches before i can sell them. Any suggestion on how this can be done? I heard an oscar can lay 2k or more eggs. I need to know what Ill need and where to get it Image

Well Im guessing a 300 gallon or so water through is the way to go with some sort of home made sump filter. Any idea how many babies can be raised per gallon? Any one else into breeding them here?

Hey ryan, where's your avatar, lol?
Couldn't resist ...

Sorry, I'm not in the oscar business, but I don't think anybody raises 2k oscar babies, perhaps a few hundreds? Oh my god, guess you need a biiiig filter

Don't worry that far ahead, for many it's a challenge to get any of them survive. Eggs may not get fertilized, or get fertilized and fungus, or get eaten, fry can die for various reasons. Lots of things can work to cut down the number of remaining fry you have. I very much doubt you have to worry about 2000 eggs! good luck,

hehe I always get ahead of myself. Image Just cant stand to kill them off if i do get them and want to absorb all the info i can. These are the first fish I actually cared enough about to care and now I went from having a 20g tank with some guppies ect to being an all out fan of fish. Darn oscars got me hooked on this hobby ever since i got them. hehe Image

Ryan, I can identify with what you said. I was the same way - never thought much about fish till my first Oscar. Now we have 7 tanks and working on the 8th! I would guess my oscars had about 200 eggs. They did hatch, but I can't find any fry so I'm guessing the parents ate them. This was their first spawn, so I'm hoping next will end better.

At least someone can identify with me Image Maybe next time you could take the eggs out and put them in a separate tank to hatch. You can buy stuff for fungus at local pet stores usually. Also I heard that putting an air stone in there help alot. If you have ICQ add me. My #s in my signature Image

my dad used to raise oscars and when the oscars laid the eggs on a piece of slate he put them in a 40 gallon tank with nithing else in it and he used a sponge filter and before the eggs hatched as soon as he would put the eggs in the seperate tank he would put ich medicine in there or quick cure so they wont get any fungus ect. and when they hatched he fed them brine shrimp until they were able to eat crused cichlid food. thats how he had done it for about 5 years or so. good luck!!!!!

I have a pair of breeding oscars which i am patiently waiting for them to spawn and have eggs for the first time I was told that they can have 200 eggs layed at a time which is a bit much but i don't expect the first batch to survive for fear of being eaten.

great expectations are things that refuse to materialize and a promise never kept.

Right now I have 4 oscars. I was beat up and is healing in his own tank Image The third is still in the tank with the supposed pair. I was thinking of giving him away so they wouldnt beat him up like the other one but Im too attached hehe. Right now Im waiting to be sure they are a pair before i do anything like that. That way I dont get rid of my baby for nothing. Think they would still breed with him/her in the tank?(125g). Also the 2 I think is a pair look as if their tubes are coming out. They arent out very far so its hard to get a good look. Like maybe 1-2 mm. ANy ideas? Image
