Hi all,
My convicts just layed eggs,,, this is the first time i have had any fish lay egg and i was just wondering if should be doing anything out of the ordinary or not,,, normally do about 30% water change a week,, PH is kept about 7, they are in a 45 gallon tank with another 2 young convicts and 2 small sucking catfish..
although they are only convicts it kinda exciting for me,, never had anything breed besides mystery snails,, bloody things are everywhere now,, only ever kept a pair discus and male dwarf gourami's and some yabbies and paradise fish in another tank until recently,,

Hi Mick,

With convicts you usually don't have to do anything. They take care of everything themselves. I'd say just check that you have some hiding places in case the male starts beating up on the female when they decide on who gets to be closest to the eggs

Congrats!! on the eggs. I have some fry now from my first breeding. Convicts parents are better than some human parents. Like the post above mentioned the male might be a little aggressive towards the female when the fry are a couple of days old. With the other fish in the tank they might not get hostile with eachother because they are to busy chasing the other fish. I thing to plan on is maybe getting some baby brine shrimp or fry food that comes in a tube. I suggest getting a syringe to use to feed the fry the shrimp. Good Luck!!

thanks guys,, I already started to notice them competing for who gets to fan the eggs,,, the female is about half the size of the male but she always seems to win, she can be quite an aggressive little fish,,quite interesting to watch,

keep an eye on the male as they are known to kill the female to take control of the fry.

So far so good, i have some wrigglers now, male and female are still geting on quite well,
when should i move them into a tank on there own??

You can do it at any time: as eggs, as wigglers, as ree swimmers. Or you can do it not at all. It depens on what you want to do, and also weather your pair will eat the babes

I just noticed in your profile that you are into Taekwon-do?? Been Training long?? I do TKD my self, been training for about 13-14 years - since i was 8 or 9. Got my first dan in about 1995 and was promoted to instructor in 1996 - I used to be the youngest instructor in my area.

I train in Newcastle, Australia at several different classes, The form is Rhee Taekwon-do. My Master is Master Chong Chul Rhee 8th Dan - I beleive he is some relation to the Master Rhee from America who i am sure you have heard of, We actualy had a grading/open day on sunday. It was great, Master Rhee Attends all of our areas open days and examines all gradings. A shot at a 2nd Dan would be Awesome - Train hard!, In my style you can acheive 1st dan in about 3-4 years, a 2nd dan is only given to Instructors who currently have there own class/es and have been 1st dan for about 6 or more years but there are exceptions, to sit for 2nd you have to be invited you cannot ask for it. It sounds pretty harsh but it keeps the standards extremely high - the 2nd dans i have trained with in my style of TKD are the equivelent of 4-5 dans i have trained with from other styles.
How about you what form do you do? How long have you been training? When did you get 1st Dan? Have you trained with many different Masters / Styles? I have trained in several forms of Karate and TKD, I have also trained in forms of Chinese Martial arts such as Wing Chun, but i have found i am best suited to Rhee Taekwon-do, it was the first one i trained in and the best.

Back to the Fish, Convicts are doin well both parents are taking turns garding the eggs and chasing off other fish that come near,, the male trys to attack me through the glass even. They only had a small ammount of eggs but the majority of them hatched, i think there is about 50+ wigglers.
