How easy is it to breed convicts?

ok, I have never actually bred them but, from what I have heard, and read,...there are 3 steps to breeding convicts. 1)place a male convict in the tank 2)place a female convict in the tank 3)wait a few weeks... that is how hard it is to get them to breed. You dont really have to do anything, just feed and keep water clean

In my expierience You Do not breed convicts: they breed themselves. (and theyd do it in a puddle of water if thats all thats available.

Just watch the male as he might try and kill the female after the fry have hatched.

I must agree, guys. Convicts are like rabbits. A pair can easily get out of control, since they are quite prolific breeders.

how many convicts can you put in a 20 gal tank? Is it good to have one male and 2 females?

Youd probably get about 6 comfortably in a 20g tank. If they breed its probably not best to have an odd one out

I dont know what my problem is then. I must have an old barely fertile female con since I have only had two batches of fry in about 8 or 9 months. And with my last batch of fry my female killed my male. I am wondering if I just had a bad pair? I am considering getting a few more to add to my tank to see if I can get a better pair. My pair were albino (pink) convicts. I would rather have a pair of regular black striped cons. I am considering giving my old ones away and trying to get another better breeding pair to put in my 30 gal. I really dont know anything that i could be doing wrong, but i just havent had good luck. I also have a female jaguar who has had one batch of eggs, but i couldnt find a male large enough to breed with her. I have bought 2 different males and she has killed both of them. She is VERY aggresive towards anything. She eats everything that I put into the tank as soon as it hits the water. It takes the fun out of feeding her feeders since there is no show involved. She will hold 3 or 4 in her mouth and continue to chase the others around the tank.

really that many? But dont they get to be 6 in. long. How many adults could I fit in a 20gal

Well your best bet in regards to the jag. if you want to breed her is to take her out and put her in a 5 gallon bucket or another empty tank if you have one... then put the male in the main tank and let him adjust for an hour or two then rearrange any dercorations that are in there and put the female back in. This should greatly reduce the aggression as it will no longer be her territory.

Very easy. I am new to cichlids so i decided to buy a pair of cons. 4 days later they laid about 70 eggs, and are now swimming.
