Well you can fill it up with water and let it sit for awhile. Then use a scrub brush or pad and scrub the sides really good. Some people use bleech and that will kill everything. You must remember to flush that tank SEVERAL times before any use...

I cleaned my 25gallon with water only and then i took 25% of water from my 75gallon and felled the rest from reg. tap water. I waited 2hours so the oxygen could circulate. After I waited I place my african cichlid in the tank with 2 250mg pennicillins as directed. When I went in to check on my fish apprx.2 hours later. My african cichlid was dead. ( I had also set up my filter so I could cycle the water) Is there anything that I did wrong to kill my fish. Please help.

75% tap water = chlorine or chloramine. If you didn't condition the tap water that would kill a sick fish pretty quickly. The smallest trace of either is very toxic to any fish.

If the water was alot colder or warmer than the tank you took him out of, you could have shocked him that way also.

Sounds like shock and chlorine poisoning to me
You should have just filled the whole tank with water from the the tank he was in.
The tap water also would be a different ph from the original tank water.
A sick fish just wouldnt stand a chance in that situation.

What were you treating him for?

I was treating him for worms and i was going to put my O in there too for cloudy eye. But I always use reg. tap water to do water changes??? Why would it harm my african now. Also can I place my filter back into my 75 gallon or should I clean it first and how do I clean it???I feel like I am destine to have my O and Jd only. That's not a bad thing. But I want more.....
Thank u for all your help.

Also should I take my tap water to be tested then to see if I need to start conditioning it??? When i took the water in my 75 gallon to be tested they said I had a high nitrate.

You really should look into the nitrogen cycle of aquariums.

1. All water from the tap needs to be conditioned BEFORE you put it into your aquarium, or it will harm your fish.

2. If you clean your biological filter, you will harm the bacteria which turns Ammonia into Nitrites and Nitrites into Nitrates which seems to be a problem already. Mechanical filters can be rinsed in used aquarium water.

Do you have high Nitrite or Nitrate?

You may want to read this article on tank cycling --

This information is very useful and could help you out. Good Luck!

HA yes the new tank syndrome is a silent killer. Water looks nice but if you dont age the water for a few days or put dechloninater in it at least they will die or become very sick with things like popeye and burnt gills.

Then if you dont keep an eye on the cycling process while the fish are in there and the ammonia or nitrites spike that will kill them too just not straight away. Nitrates is not as bad as nitrites but its best to keep that down to as far as posible.( plants are great with helping that part}
It all sound complicated at first but once you get the gist of how cycling works its pretty much a breeze.
