FYI - How to get a CHEAP filter

Postby Nova on Thu Jul 12, 2001 5:46 pm

Well, I went and checked at the specialty store near me (remember, clearance canister filters) and they said that they had JUST sold out of them. I missed out on a $50 Fluval 404. Bummer.

Anyways, FYI, apparantly the *new* models come out and the store puts the "old" ones on super clearance to get them out of there. They said this happens every one to three years. Check at the store near you! Maybe the same thing is going on there!

In the stores, the Fluval 404 is usually $170 (that's US dollars). I'm about to get the one from Big Als. I'm really excited about getting a cannister filter.

I was going to upgrade to a new filter system. HOWEVER I was disappointed to hear about the Fluval 404 compared to the Eheim 2268 and the Pro 2068. Nova call Big Al's and ask what the basic difference is between the two you will be surprised. I am going to save up and buy the Eheim. It will just take longer now but in the long run it will be A lot better off in doing so.

Ok, so I just got off the phone with Big Al's. The guy I talked to was not too impressed with the Fluval. Good to hear since i'm getting all the final touches on my order. The Eheim sounds incredible, but it's way out of my price range...

The guy I was talking with said that the Magnum 350 was a much better filter than the Fluval 404. Do you agree? Should I go with the Magnum then?

Well from what I have heard the 350 Pro is a great clean up filter. The 404 is much easier to maintain and clean up then the magnum. The advantage to the 350 pro would be that ultra fine filter cartrage it uses. Also I like the clean look of the canister setups as they stay under your tank. With the 350 Pro you will have the bio wheels ontop as well. I personally would go with the Fluval over the 350 pro. The only thing I guess you could do is talk to people who have owned the 350 and the 404 and way the pro's and con's of both. Good luck...

I've heard it both ways: one person tells me the Fluval is a better filter, the next tells me the Magnum is. You said you like the Fluval better; is it acceptable as an only filter, or do I need to get something else?

Both filters are a stand alone setup, unless utilizing them for tanks greater then 100g.
