Sick oscar will not eat

Postby tintin on Sun Oct 29, 2000 4:58 pm

Hi all,

I have 2 albino oscars, still baby sized at the moment. One of the two got bigger quicker than the other as he/she is the more aggresive eater. But three days ago he stopped eating. He/she started moping about the tank, not hungry at the surface as usual, fins down and now he is doing long white/clear poops everyday. I am really worried about him. I moved him to a hospital tank and hit him with an all round medicine and he is still doing long clear poops and not eating. HELP!

Hi Tintin,

As always good water quality is a must. You can try some anti-fungal medicine,(anti-fin rot stuff etc..). What have you been feeding them? If pelletes try feeding something with greasy meat content, like goldfish if you trust the source etc...or maybe some shrimp etc...frozen etc.....hope he gets better..

Thanks Joe, I have good water. I asked a lot of people on Tom's fish chat and they all suggested internal parasites. I went to one lfs and they had no idea and suggested some crap which I decided not to buy. I went to the 2nd lfs (They are a very good one but a little further away) and he said it was internal parasites because that's what no eating and long clear poop suggests. He gave me three capsules to throw into the tank. I was wondering, he didn't tell me whether to just throw the capsules in, or open them up then spread the contents of the capsule into the tank. I think the later. So I opened one up today and spread the poweder througout the tank, will see how he goes. I see now, it is so much sadder when an oscar gets sick, instead of any other fish I own. I LOVE my oscars now!!!

Hi Tintin,

Yes, you're right, if it is only the poop and there is no evidence of FIN ROT along with it etc...ie external damage then yes internal parasites. Truth is best rule of thumb is to treat for parasites and bacteria and fungus if there's signs of it, ie rotting etc...and yea, i guess some capsules may melt but you should open the capsule and dump the powder into your tank. It looks pretty cool as the blue/yellow etc, powder spreads through your water coloring it Image

OK, now I have been using this capsule which is for internal parasites, and yesterday I noticed his fins starting to rot, this is so sad!

So now I have an oscar who will not eat, has clear poop and has fin rot too. This is really sad. I am treating him for internal and external diseases now and I am doubtful that he will make it.

Hi Tintin,

That is what I suspected and is why I recommended that you treat with something against Fin rot and also anti-fungus since sometimes Fungal infections accompany Fin rot which is a bacterial disease. So for fin rot use some anti-biotics to kill the bacteria. And add in there some anti-fungal stuff too as I said before...I really hope your fish gets better! keep me up-to-date and let us know how things go, good luck!

Don't forget the water change everytime you go to add additional medications to the tank. This seems like nothing but is very critical for treatment of the fish. Well...best of luck to ya!! Fingers are crossed!

Yep, you don't want to survive the disease and die of nitrite levels Image

Sick oscar will not eat

Postby tintin on Mon Nov 13, 2000 10:55 pm

My oscar was looking a little more active a week ago so I moved him back into the big tank and to my amazement, the other baby oscar is now almost twice as big as the little sick guy! (They were the same size).

And the little sick one is all better now, not eating as much as he/she used to, but eating and loves being back with his/her partner.

Looks like the medicine I got for internal parasites worked. So did the multicure medicine as the finrot is totally gone and all fins are healed.

Great news! Thanks once again for all the advice.

Hi Tintin,

Great to hear your oscar got better, hopefully with some good feeding it'll start catching up on some of that 'growing' Image
