african cichlids

Postby jason_912 on Sat Dec 29, 2001 11:37 pm

I have recently set up another tank (30 gal) and went to the LFS and bought two buttercoferi(spelling?) Does anyone know anything about these fish? The LFS told me that they are aggressive, but how aggressive? They are babies, about three quarter inch in length. Any comments are appreciated about feeding, etc. Thanks and everyone have a great new year!!!

Well if you meant Tilapia Buttikoferi, yes they are very aggressive, like Red Devils some say even more.
'T. buttikoferi is an easily maintained species living happily in slightly acidic to slighlty alkaline water. Hardness seems of little import in keeping the species, as T. buttikoferi can be easily kept with Lake Malawi species in a community tank. It is omnivorous, relishing most prepared and frozen foods along with a variety of green plant matter such as nori, lettuce or zuccini.

Yeah they are mean suckers... you may have to seperate them eventually. I have never read that they do well with tank mates when they mature. Also the tank size will have to be upgraded to at least a 60 gallon tank, there is a lfs near me that has a 16-18" one in a tank there.
