cupid cichlid with butt protusion

I have a young otherwise healthy cupid with two red "filiment" like protusions. I'm concerned and stumpted. Please respond if you have any idea what this could be.

Where are the protrusions located? Are there any other tank occupants. You may want to raise the temp to around 82-84 and add some aquarium salt, as a preventative measure...until you find out what it is. If there is a way of posting a picture, we could further assist you.

If the protusions are located at his anal opening I think it is his rectum pushed out due to overfeeding. Its a pretty common thing with Cichlids. You just feed smaller amounts frequently through the day.

I did a little research and discovered they are an intestinal parasite called camallanus. Unfortunately it would appear to be very difficult to treat and it can spread throughout the aquarium. I have bought some medication and pray it will work.
I would love to hear of any success stories dealing with this blood sucker.

Yeah that would have been my diagnosis. Good to know you found info on it and are trying to treat it. Hope things get better for you.
