Another large predator Cichlasoma (Parapetenia) motaguense is very closely related to C. friedrichsthalii and C. loisellei. It's a little more streamlined than it's sibling species and prefers the faster flowing waters of the riverine enviorment. In the aquarium this very powerfully built (looks like a C. friedrichsthalii on steroids) cichlid attains a lenght of about one foot. It's pseudocanines enable it to capture prey in the wild and cause major physical trama in the aquarium. As aggressive as it is, do not keep this fish with C. dovii as the larger and very closely related dovii will vigorously pursue and eventually kill it. Most people still refer this species to the subgroup Nandopsis, this is no longer the case. Robert Miller has proposed that Nandopsis be restricted to the 5 species in the Greater Antilles. In view of that we have chosen to revert all other nandopsis to the old Parapetenia subgroup.
