Red Jewel Cichlids fighting

Postby mcmiral on Sun Nov 18, 2001 7:38 pm

I know this is a pretty strange question to ask, but I had bought 3 Red Jewel cichlids and put them into my community tank, all is well, and nothing has went missing except my Japonica Shrimp (lets call them "fancy feast") One of them is still stressed out from the shipping, and so I got a replacement, so the stressed out one is still swimming and whatnot, just slow and with his fins clamped all the time. The replacement was a very strong looking, wonderfully healthy and very vibrant fish. Put him/her into my tank, and the previous lot of fish, except the stressed one is picking on it. I was just wondering, is this normal, do I have anything to worry about, or is it just territorial fighting?

Thats just normal territorial fighting.
Its best to add new fish at the time you feed the others. This way they oldies are distracted.
Jewels are not really a community cichlid. What other fish is in the tank with them?

Add some salt at 1 tablespoon oer 10 gallons to help with the stress.

He He he.....I have tried all that you mentioned, and in many places I have heard that it is not good to keep a small group of them, rather at least 10-20 in a group. I added the new fish right after dropping in a couple cubes of bloodworms and all the other things that they love.... that did not distract them as much as I would have liked. I was thinking about adding more of the guys. They do seem to be getting along with all my other fish fine....surprising enough, a bunch of smallish tetras (I know they will be enough for feed pretty soon) a black ghost knife, couple of red plecos, what else........a couple albino irridescent sharks.....all housed in a 108 gallon tank....All seems to be well, so far the only casualties were the shrimp. I know I will have more, but that is probably in the future. I salted the water as recommended by many, as well as you. I was thinkin about getting a tank splitter, have one side as the bully tank, and the other as the regular tank. I was wanting to add more of the cichlids. I really like em Image

Alright Image I am totally addicted now Image I know my other fish will probably become feeders at one point in time, I was thinkin that I would let them go by attrition....that I just phase the cichlids in, instead of removing the others. Just added 6 more red jewels to the tank, the fighting is over, and all is well. An expensive solution, but it all worked out for the better Image

Oscar2001, thank you very much for your suggestions.

Cheers
