i was wondering how big do convicts need to be to breed?because i went to a store and there were convicts that were only about an inch long and the females already had orange bellys?

they could probably mate at that size, around 2" is pretty much guaranteed to breed. Get them at whatever size you can tell the differance between male and female, the longer they have a chance to be together before mating the better of a pairing you'll have, and hopefully the more successful their breeding will be.

Yeah most females can mate at that size.

You should also realize, they can breed to a point, out of control.

Are you supplying your LFS, with convict cichlids. What I mean is...What are your plans with the fry?

breeding convicts

yeah, mine got to the point where they were spawning every 10 days or so. Ive had to put a tank divider in between the males and females and then I let them get togeather about every 6 weeks. What I dont use as feeders gets given to the lfs. They won't even pay for convicts because they so readily breed.

Man i can't believe that yours spawn every 10 days. My convicts must be really old or something. I have only had 2 births of fry from my convicts and i have had them about 9 or 10 months. I dont think that i am going to have any more fry for a while thought since the female killed my male the last time that they bred. Is there something that i am doing to make them not breed as much before or is there just something that you are doing to get them to breed so much?

Whatever you are doing, aaroncain, is what I need to know. If yours only breed every now and then, I want to know what you are doing. It would be great to own a few convicts again and not have to worry about over-populating the tank, in a few short weeks. You should not be complaining, but happy instead.

well wolf i wish i knew what to tell you. I want to have more than what i am currently having so that i can use them as feeders. I just dont have good luck with trying to breed fish at all. I used to have a guppy tank and i tried to breed them and i only ended up getting 2 or 3 fish out of a 4 or 5 month period. I am pretty sure that the babies were getting eaten though. As for the convicts i wish i could reverse it. Maybe we just need to trade convicts, hehhe Image. Also can anyone tell me the easiest fish to breed for feeders, or do i already have them? I might just need to get some new convicts.

You already have them. However, I have had great success with Jaguar, as well. The breeding pair I have breeds every 3-4 weeks. Believe it or not, but I use Jaguar fry, as feeders, for my other smaller fish, I keep.
