Help on Breeding/Raising. I have Questions??

Postby mysticalsubs on Mon Jan 22, 2001 4:33 pm

My Oscars have recently laid eggs and I have no experience breeding fish. This was a totaly suprise, a happy suprise but still a total shocker. If you can answer a few question I would appreciate it.

Should I seperate the fish from the eggs?
Should I wait and then seperate the fry from the fish? Or Just leave the fry with the Oscars?

About how often will Oscars breed?

Do most of the eggs hatch? Survive?

Do pet stores buy fish from amateur breeders?

Is it possible for the eggs to be sterile? If so, how long should I wait before removing them? or do I even remove them?

I thank you for any information on breeding/raising Oscars.

Hi,

I'd recommend to just give the oscars a chance to take care of the eggs. Reduce the light to their tank, maybe even put paper around it, basically don't let anything disturb them. See that there's no strong currents in tank etc...would be ok to separate fry from parents but I'd leave them in with parents at least until they hatch. The eggs might die because of fungus, or they may be sterile ,not fertilized etc....they should hatch in about 3 or 4 days....wait a max of 7 days....basically hatching time depends on temp in your tank....etc...to prevent fungus make sure tank is plenty oxygenated....and clean water...good luck and keep us posted
