filter and tank size?

Postby aaroncain on Tue Nov 06, 2001 7:20 pm

I have a couple of questions about filters.
first off what are your opionions about biowheel filters and cannister style filters, pros? cons?
How big of a tank will a filter that will filter 330 gph work for?

Bio wheels are a good idea for keeping a workable benificial bacteria in the water.
Canaster filters like the Fluval 404 are good although cleaning may be a bit of a pain.

filter and tank size?

Canister filters are great! A really good option if you have the money... but it is well worth it... each brand has advantages and each will have a group loyal to it I would try and research them all and find the one who's options fit your needs and wants. But all the MarineLand (Magnum), Eheim, and Fluval filters are excelent choices. You want to have your water turning over at least 10 times an hour... so if you had a 10 gallon tank it would filter 100 gallons per hour etc etc. In your case a 30 gallon tank would be very good for your filter of 330 gph. Bio-Wheels are an excellent choice and add a great deal of de-nitrifying bacteria and allows you to stock the tank more heavily.

It's good to have you aboard and feel free to ask as many questions as you want no matter how dumb the seem to you, it probably isnt one.

filter and tank size?

Postby aaroncain on Thu Nov 08, 2001 1:02 pm

thanks for the help and good advice. I definatly need a bigger filter than that. I just didn't know how many gph per gallon that i needed. As for which type of filter, that is still up in the air at this point in time. I have heard that they both have their advantages. Well thanks once again and i look forward to posting and reading more!
