Postby getmoney1 on Mon Sep 17, 2001 6:29 pm

I am getting little white patches on the glass of my fish tank. What is that? Is that Algae and what is a quick remedy for getting rid of it? My take is 125 gallons, with 2 10" Oscars. Someone please help me out. Thank You!

other members have had problems with this but not sure what they did to get rid of it other then get rid of whatever it's growing on. If it's on the tank then you cant very well do that. A pleco, might help, only other thing you could try is doing more frequent water changes, to try and lower the nutrient level of the tank.

You might try reading some other posts on this site... maybe even use the search function to research what others have said in the past... such as this one that was posted only a few days ago... http://www.cichlidfish.com/ubb/Forum1/HTML/000796.html

Algae

there are many solutions..

1) plecos are effiecent, but not really good if they get fed another type of food, like zucini or algae tablets.

2) get some apple snails, you got a 125 gal tank, so i would recommend about 5. or more. amazingly, my O left my snails alone. didnt pick on it, or eat them. but my O at garden snails.

3) get a heavy dark blanket to block off any light source. (of course, turn off the aquarium lights) continue filtration and aeration. dont feed while in the process, and dont worry, your oscar can survive without food for longer than a week. continue the process for about 3-4 days

4) juss scrap it off, that just takes about 30 seconds.

5) i wouldnt recommend that stuff that gets rid of algae chemically. it'll juss come back later and chemicals wouldnt b that good for the water.

if your tank is near sunlight or a bright light, thats probably starting it.
also overfeeding could be the problem. the spoiled food and the poop causes algae and ammonia breakouts.

Algae

personally, i'd make sure there is not too much light getting to the tank, and i'd get a pleco. many stores will have larger ones that people trade in, and most people won't buy. they are perfect for you, though, because they'll be large enough for the oscars not to pick on them, and be able to keep the 125 gallon tank fairly clean. i actually have 2 in my 125, but i'm getting rid of one very soon. i prefer the fancier plecos, but many of them won't eat algae.
