Choosing the right number of piranhas is often a difficult question. Piranhas are confident in numbers and are probably 20 times likelier to attack. However, having one piranha is usually boring. They are scared of everything. Piranhas are also cannibalistic, so make sure they are all healthy and are around the same size. I would say 5 or 6 red-bellies would be fine in a 125 gallon tank, and, in my opinion, would be very attractive and add life to a home.

I've heard the BLACK pirhanas are NOT afraid of humans like the other ones. But that's also why I think they're more illegal than the rest.

they are legal in about half the states, california is one of them where they are illegal but there are plenty of states that allow them... there was a town near where I grew up that had a small man made pond in the middle of a park, they had to stop renting the boats to people because there were piranah attacks Image They closed the pond for about 6 months while they fished them all out... that is pretty much why they are illegal here, idiots release them into the wild instead of being responsible.

there are several stores here in indiana that sell black pirhanas.

i agree with jay as far as the number of pirhanas for you. i had 2 for a while that were scared of the 1.5" pleco i put in the tank.

black pirhanas, from what i've heard, are NOT schooling fish and should be left alone in the tank. just wanted to add that in case you were considering one.
