many cichlids, what size tank?

Postby dethmunkee on Sat Sep 15, 2001 7:45 pm

i recently lost my oscar, so im thinking of gettin more cichlids. i figure since oscars arent that aggressive compared to other big cichlids, i decide not to go with them..unless u tihnk they can handle themeselves. i was thinking about a tank setup with a :JD, jaguar, green terror, maybe 2 cons, and some others. what size tank would i need? take in mind i dont really have that much money

If you are on a limited budget I would gear your fish purchase to the tank you have, instead of gearing your tank purchase towards the fish you want, as the tank will always cost way more then the fish will (well not always in the case of my salt tank), but you get my drift. For what you mentioned I would say at least a 6'-8' tank something in the 125+ gallon range. Now if you were to limit it to any one of those species you mentioned then you could probably get off fine with a 55 gallon tank. JD's need lots of space for territory that is why the are so aggressive... I know you are looking for aggression but if your tank is set up properly there wont be any aggression... and your fish will live longer and look better.

If your after agressive pets why not just get a pair of pit bulls Image Aquaria is meant to be a peaceful hobby. You can watch them tear each other apart and not the fish.

Sorry I just couldnt resist Image

i had another person suggest an african setup, i thought of it for a while, but then i figured that it wasnt that interesting like big fish. i would consider it if i really cant get any big fish. but if i set up the tank, then i wouldnt be able to have any room if i suddenly getta bigger tank.

heh, those pit bulls are nasty! this is like really old news, but there was something going around that they might ban agressive varities of does (like pit bulls) in san francisco. the reason is that thre was this very aggressive mauling which involved a 30 something yr old lady and 2 dogs. very bloody. anyways, this is old news.

i dont want the fish to fight, that wouldnt be a good sight when i wake up. i juss wants somethin that uh...eats any other lil thing ** malicious laffer..then stops abruptly**

for the jd, jaguar, and gt a 75 gallon tank should be plenty. i've spent some time trying to decide on how to arrange the stock of my tanks and be able to add the fish i want. with some help from a good friend and VERY experienced new world cichlid keeper, i have decided on this:
125 gallon tank with a red terror, midas, jaguar, and red oscar

75 gallon tank with a texas, jack dempsey, and green terror

if you want the cons also, go for a 90 gallon, but make sure the width is greater than the heighth. most 90's i've seen are much taller, but you'd need a wide tank. height is basically irrelevant (so long as it is at least 18" tall).

by the way, there are several larger varieties of african cichlids, such as venestus which reach 10 or more inches, frontosa and buttikoferi that will reach 15", plus several that will reach 6" or more. i, too, however prefer americans over africans. don't know why, just a personal preference.
