im thinking about that suggestion to raise a pair of JDs. i know i should by about 6 of them and just let them pair up. but once they do, what do i do with the other 4? i dont have enuff room to keep them, what would i do with the extras?

Sell them or give them away maybe.

if u buy six of them to obtain a mating pair, u may want to buy each fr SEPARATE pet stores to insure that they are NOT siblings (to prevent inbreeding). or find out the source of the fish.

JD's are a little easier to breed then Oscars as the fins and colors vary slightly from male to female... if you want to be sure of a male female pair read up on sexing them and then just buy two.

It is always better to let the fish pick the pair... however if it will be difficult for you to get rid of the extras at that point you might be better off trying to pick a male and female. As long as you get them when they are younger they will usually pair off, adults tend to be a bit more picky who they mate with.

talk to someone in charge at the store you buy them from, and see if you can work out a way to trade the others back in. most places (not all though) will be happy to give you store credit for fish you trade in. i've found most places will only give you maybe one third the price they'd turn around and sell them for, but i was lucky to find a place willing to give me half.
