Rescue Adoption - Any suggestions helpful.

I was out at the local pet shop today, getting some fish supplies, and noticed a young tiger oscar (about 3 inches... maybe) in an aquarium... who wasn't feeling so well. He had a case of fungus. Not real bad yet. Think I found him soon enough. Being sick (and they were obviously going to just let him die, or whatever happened to be the future for him) I asked if I could have him. Take him home and treat him.

To my surprise, "Sure!" the guy bagged him up and handed him/her over for free.

So, I brought the little guy home. I've put him in the 5 gallon (as a temporary home while I'm treating him). I've brought the water temp up to about 80* F, added some salt, and Jungle's Fungus Eliminator.

Any suggestions/tips for bringing the little guy around would be helpful.

He's not bad off yet, he's still swimming around, dancing on the glass and such. You can tell he's not quite 100% though. Just any suggestions on helping him get better faster would be nice, the less time the poor guy has to be sick, the better.

Good onya mate Image

Sounds like your doing all the right things.
If you want you could try and put him in a bath of malchite green for 30 seconds. The dosage is 60mg per litre(sorry you will have to convert that to imperial we use metric in OZ) This colours the fungus and works pretty fast.

Malchite green eh? Sounds interesting. Might be worth it to give it a shot (and keep some around if it works really well). Could you give me some more information about this and possibly let me know where I might find some?

By the way, just thought you'd like to know, the oscar (AKA: Ozzy) is doing better now. The fungus is slowly losing the battle (means I'm winning, hehe), he's more active now, and has taken a strong liking to his food (he wouldn't eat at first when I brought him home) ^_^. Small problem though, the food he's taken a strong liking to eating (I think this is what he's been fed all along before I brought him home) is feeder fish. Have any suggestions for convincing Ozzy that cichlid pellets are in fact edible (not to mention better for him)?

Right now, feeders are the only thing he'll eat.

Thanks!

Try some beefheart as feeders arnt very good for him you might even want to soak the beef heart in a vitamin soloution too.

Another treatment is mixture of Potassium dichromate and Silver Nitrate . This is available through Aquatronics as Eye-Fungex.
This stuff you take out the fish and paint it on the fungus.

I like the name Ozzy sounds good matey.

Sorry about the Malchite green.

Its available from any good pet store or produce. Make sure its zinc free (most brands are anyway for fish use)

try oscar grow, wardley cichlid pellets, tetramin cichlid sticks, or jumbomin food sticks (you'll have to break them up). all are good foods. keep giving him the pellets, it may take him a couple of days, but he should come around. i'd get at least 2 or 3 different kinds so he'll have a varied diet. oscars can become quite finicky if fed the same thing all the time. feeders, i've found, are good though for helping to "raise the spirits" of a sick oscar. i had one that was beaten up pretty bad by a larger oscar, but perked up when i put some rosy reds in the tank. once you've accustomed him to the pellets, you can go back to giving him live feeders, live worms, crickets and crayfish(beware, i found one in my dining room-it had escaped the tank). live foods are good for new world cichlids, but as a once a week/2 week treat, not the main diet.
