the mystery fish identified?

Postby C4 on Mon Oct 08, 2001 3:29 pm

Tony and others--
I told you all about the mystery fish I had that did breed, and know the fry are getting quite large. Well I think I figured it out. I was looking in a fish encyclopedia and the closest match I could find based on a written description was someting called an "Auratus". The only problem is there were no pictures of them. Does any one have a picture of these they could post as well as any info. (My cam is not working so I have been unable to post pics of my 2 fish)

Yup that them. The female is identical to that one, and the male is turquise blue where the yellow stripes are. They live peacefully with my O and two kissing guaramies. Are the tank conditions needed similiar of the Oscars?

Melanochromis auratus are a lake Malawi cichlid and should realy be in a tank with a ph of around 8 (I use crushed coral to buffer my ph. I beleive you can wean them to a ph of 7.5 but they thrive at the higher ph. They should be fed a diet of vegetable flake and small bits of zucchini.

Tony do you reccomend putting them in another tank then? Because they have bred and raised the fry in O's tank, so they must be somewhat happy with the levels (ph around 7.5) And Ive learned that the most crucial factor in getting fish to spawn is making the water conditions near perfect to what they need. (except for convicts which would breed in a puddle)

if they're getting along fine, then it may be ok to keep them together. normally, however, it is best not to combine african cichlids with american cichlids. totally different communication which can lead to unnecessary fights and deaths, and also very different diets and water requirements. the water req. is what i would be least concerned about, as the fish you have are almost definitely tank raised and will be kept in similar water conditions as your tap water. how big is the oscar, you might be concerned about the oscar swallowing one of the auratus some day. the auratus will only grow to about 4" whereas the oscar could top 14". this is merely a possibility, not necessarily that it will happen.
