Well many coastal saltwater fish migrate up rivers during spawning times etc. so many can handle durations in freshwater, many of these fish are refered to as brackish water fish, freshwater moray eels, puffers, mollies etc etc they can all be kept in freshwater for periods of time but to achieve healthy happy fish they need substantial amounts of salt in the water as they get older or their health will suffer. It sounds to me like this fish is just being kept in the wrong enviroment at the moment as LFS's have a tendency to do very often. If you checked that site I posted, the pictures of them were quite large... I dont think this would be a good fish for the fish tank in a long term sense, however it may be a slightly differant variety as they talked about in the website I posted. Size of fish in the same family dont vary that much most of the time, and many of the fish pictured were 3-4' long even if the species at the store is a small one I wouldn think it would still get upwards of 2' long. I personally wouldnt get it as I dont think enough is known to properly care for it.
