question???

You just decide on the water parameters based on the durability of the fish. If you have a resistant south american but very picky african, keep the water to the african's liking and let the south americans adapt to it. Or try lowering pH to lowest african will tolerate etc...there's always a trade-off...

reply to cichlidfish: thats very interesting but wouldn't that put unessesary stress on the south american cichlids until they adapt to the ph?

question???

I just don't like causing my fish to go through anything that could stress them out and make them less resistant to things like disease.I like the african cichlids but if I were going to keep them and southamericans I would keep them in seperate tanks.I would like to hear more about your oppinion on this subject.Thank you.

Hi Sparky,

Of course, it would be best to have separate tanks. What I'm saying though is some fish, like oscars and other durables can do ok in varying pH while some of your other african or other lake fish might be picky. There are many kinds of trade-offs, consider the trade-off between fish stress and your stress when your wallet is empty....so what I recommend is "separate" tanks if you can afford it.
