if u want some neo tropical cichlids...get a convict, a firemouth, a salvini or seomthing not big. those fish get about 6 inches wen they're adults. i wouldnt have a pair of fish in a 30 beacuse they could breed and make the other fish live like hell. u cant keep anything large, like oscars, JDs, servums, terrors, etc.

You can get a mating pair of convicts in your 30 gallon w/o problems. Just don't add any more fish to your tank. Convicts breed really easy, the problem is what are you going to do with them? No one really wants convicts and the pet stores here anyways have more then they can sell as it is.. Good luck on selling them...

30 gallon tank

Postby S42K on Thu Jul 26, 2001 3:40 pm

I just aquired a 30 long tank with a Fluval 304, marinland powerhead and UGF. It was given to me by a friend who owns her own Vet clinic. She use to use it as a med tank, but doesn't have a call for it really.

So anyways I decided to go salt. I am going to do a reef tank with one of the various clowns, mandarin gobby, Nasu Tang, and something else I have not decided. Going to use the 304, remove the UGF, and use the powerhead behind the live rock for currents. This will be my first salt tank setup and should be an adventure >.=)

yah, convicts are pretty easy to breed, like rabbits. maybe you can get 2 pairs... but, usually fish stores have too many convict babys. they breed once a month, so b shure to kno what to do with them. i breed cons to feed my oscar.

be careful with the mandarins as they rarely accept prepared foods they pretty much only eat the little critters that live on live rock, and I have read that they need a tank with 100+ lbs of rock to survive otherwise they will wipe out any populations of those critters that you have and will starve. I was thinking about getting one for my tank but after I found that out I reconcidered. Also be aware that you should only have about 6" of fish in a tank that size going by the 1" per 5 gallons rule... so that would be like 2-3 small fish. Oh also you can only have one variety of clown fish in that tank as the differant types will kill each other you need 120+ gallons to house more then one type of clown fish.

30 gallon tank

Postby S42K on Fri Jul 27, 2001 3:54 pm

Here's a good info site on various species: Fishindex for fresh, salt, plants, and ponds. I have read about the 150lbs of live rock as well. However Big Al's Online and some LFS all said I could keep him in my 30L as long as I do not get more then one. Unless its a female. You can feed them live foods, but they might not accept it. The LFS here keep them in the smallest of tanks by themselves, and feed them brine shrimp. I should be okie with a captive breed species. I was only gonna keep one wild cought clown fish but of what profile unsure. 4 fish was the max for my tank. Chances are if they get to big I will trade them in for smaller ones or a different fish.

Thx for info,

30 gallon tank

mandarins need 100+pounds of live rock and the little critters r called copepods!!!the copepods need 3 months to build up otherwise your mandarins will starve!!!the cost for lighting is going to be expensive!!!!a 30 gal normal would cost around 250$think about long!!!extra cash comin out!!!i also have a five gal. mini reef and had saltwater tanks but lost hundreds!!! u r going in to deep cost with a reef tank!!! u can put 3 lbs per gallon for max pounds.ok thats all lol!!!i have a percula clownfish and 3 1\2 lbs in the five gallon also. id get a nice pair of maroons for that tank. with 90 pounds of live rock in the tank u will not have to feed them that much. for food id recomend omega 1 thats wat i use to feed my false percula 1 a week.i dont think a naso tang would do well in the 30 gal.

Hi Tony,

I know this site is called, "cichlidfish" but how about we set up a "SaltWater" aquaria forum as well? Let me know what you think,

Shady fish---If you want an easy fish to breed that is also profitable try angel fish (believe it or not they are a cichlid) They are always in demand by lfs due to their popularity. I currently have 4 breeding pairs. My convicts are raised as a feeder for my oscar. What I dont use up gets donated to the lfs because they won't even pay for them. Convicts are a good learning fish though. You could raise up a couple spwns just to learn and then switch to a more profitable fish.
