Aeration--Red Devil Tank

Postby Rospino on Sun Jul 22, 2001 1:08 pm

I have a 80 gallon tank w/ a Red Devil. I have an overflow with a wet/dry filter. Will this provide my tank enough oxegenation/aeration...or do I need a seperate pump/bubbler?

Thanks,

Pete

This really depends with only one fish in the tank you might be able to rely on just the wet dry for gas exchange... you will just have to watch the fish for sign of oxygen starvation, if you dont see any then you are probably fine.

One thing to note is the nitrifying bacteria use a lot of oxygen in their metabolism of the ammonia and nitrite, so if your filter is putting more air into the water then they need you are fine, if they are using everything that is put in then you need additional bubblers... hope that made some sense Image

Another way to create great disolved oxygen content is to create movement at the waters surface, powerheads do a great job at this. This will also improve oxygen content by breaking up the surface film.

You can tell if there's not enough O2 in the water if the fish seem to be breathing fast, or if they are gasping for air at the surface of the water.

Hey you got a pic of your red devil?
I have one in issolation due to killing his tank mates and hes only a juvenile.
I have a tank cylcling for him at the moment.
If he wasnt such a nice looking fish I would have gotten rid of him.(cost me a fortune in replacing tank mates and he also gets all the gravel and makes a huge wall of gravel at the front of the tank. Even my oscars arnt that bad.

Aeration--Red Devil Tank

A question i have a 7 inches red devil for about a year and 2 months and he seems to be stop in his growing. He looks very well and is very agressive , but recently his not eating as well as he did before. He eats the minimun necessary. He has no sign of hole in the head. If the food is a litle big, he seems to have problem in the gills to triturate it. I'm thinking that he have some kind of parasite that is bothering him. Also how big it is supposed to be? He is alone in a 55 gallon tank.
