I know it's off the subject of cichlids, but has anyone had any luck with keeping trout?

I can not see why you could not keep trout. People keep Bass and other lake fish just fine, and even with their cichlids.

Trout are a really sensitive fish. Also, they require very cool water.

I had a Perch once, before he committed suicide by jumping out of the tank, and he was by far one of my favorites!

Champso. caeruleus “Malawi Trout”

Who says you can't have a Cichlid and a Trout all in one?

They get about 15" and will only eat fish small enough to fit into its
mouth and are usually found alone in the wild.

I recently cought 2 perch in the local lake and kept them with my Cichlids without any problems. I kept them for awhile and then released them back into their lake.
My LFS recently had a Malawi trout. I believe it sold for $20-$30 range. I would perfer the compressicep though. Dimidiochromis compressiceps, whose name is derived from its compressed body, uses its extremely narrow body to its advantage in ambushing prey. It hunts with its head angled downward, and its narrow body outline toward its prey so as to minimize its visibility.

Haps are only moderately aggressive. They live away from the rocks and cruise the open water alone, and are seldom seen in groups. Haps have long, slender, almost torpedo-like bodies, which allows them to suddenly burst into speed. This suits their predatory behavior.Haps have developed some very unique hunting adaptations, which makes them fun to watch.

Is the Malawi Trout compatible with oscars? Or, would he have to have his own tank?

I would keep Oscars by themselves. Do not mix Cichlids that have high protein requirements with vegetarians. Tt's best not to mix Cichlids from different lakes with the exception of those from Lakes Malawi and Victoria. Do not mix Cichlids of similar shape or coloring. Don't keep Cichlids of the same genus, and especially not the male of one and only the female of another. These are some basic rules to follow that I got from (Link)

Also I posted a great compatibility chart under Makes a Fish, Healthy, Wealthy and Wise.

Where are Lakes Malawi and Victoria?

They seem really neat, but I don't think I have a spot for one to live. They look like they get too large for my (soon to be old) tank.

The Malawi Trout is an open water cruiser and it is recommended that the aquarium be no less than a 125g long and it is a pereditory fish (aggressive).

Lake Malawi and Victoria are in South Africa, they are both on the map.
