Too many kids

Postby Woodrow on Mon Jun 11, 2001 6:28 pm

My pair of Dempseys have produced more than 200 fry about a month ago. Most have survived to this point and there are too many for me to keep. Do local fish stores buy fish from the general public? If so, what is the current going rate for Dempseys? At what age should the fish be before selling them? Any help is appreciated.

Well some lfs might buy from you. However since you are not really an established breeder they might veer to their more established breeder. I have heard and do not know if this is true, fish are marked up 3x from wholesale. A JD goes for $1.99 to $2.99 at my LFS. So the LFS probly gets them for 65 cents to 97 cents. I remember talking to my LFS awhile back, he told me he paid $22 for this fish and sells it for $29 and peoples were complaining about the high prices. I know he pays $1 something for Oscars and sells them for $4.99. So I guess it varies from fish to fish, and location. Hmmmmm the one thing I could say is if your in good with your LFS, you have a better chance of selling your fry to them and getting a better deal done. Good luck with that Woodrow...

Bring a sample of the fish (about 25 of them) to the local fish store because they will need to see the fish anyway, and they will tell you what size they want them at ect. They will probaly give you about 60 cents per fish, or 25% off in store purchases. Whatever you prefer. Call first to make sure the owner or manager will be in, but don't tell them your bringing fish in as they will give you the runabout. Suprise works best Ive found. You can also try selling them online (check out aquabid.com) youll get more money this way.

Hello,

The best way to sell your fish is to call some shops and ask them if they have the fish in stock. If they tell you no, ask them if they would be interested in buy some from you.
