lots of Q's!!!

Okay, my two cons are both females (they ate the eggs). But since they have reached sexual maturity I have purchased them a boy toy. What is the proper tank size for spawnning them? Can I put both females in with him? Does the colar variation come into play on weather they will spawn? (1 female striped convict, 1 female pink convict and the male is also a pink)

Hi Candice,

As a "boy" I must say I am deeeeply offended by what seems to be a regard for boys as only sex toys. my lawyer will provide details.... I'm just kidding of course! Image
Busy day, so I gotta run.....if you keep 1 male and 2 females in 10gallon might be ok if you have "plenty" of hiding places for the extra female. A 20 or 25 gallon would be a lot better.

I put the pink male and the pink female togeather in a 40-gal tank. Is this too much room for them to tango? Also should I removethe power head I have on one of my undergravel tubes? It seems as though the water is circulating the tank to quickly (ecspecially if they end up spawning.) How long does it usually take before a newly introduced pair will get down and dirty?

I would put the other female in there also, regardless of color patterns or schemes. He will pair up with one of them, I'm sure, with all that estrogen floating around in there Image J/K!
I did an experiment of the breeding patterns of convict cichlids back in high school and won first prize for it(WHOO HOO!) Was something different and they loved it. The Weird thing is one of the 5 pairs that I had that I bread<--? was a white(pink or albino, whatever you wanna call them) male and a black striped female. When there fry actually grew up a bit I knoticed that it was almost half and half, equally down the middle, male to female & striped to "albino". Understand what I mean by that?
Well, anyways, I believe that the 40ga will be more than enough, you can actually put another male in there, with some decent cover, and watch to see if all your fish would pair up, which I wouldn't be surprised if they did, bunch of hoochies they are! And if they do, well then, congrats! You are off to the rat-race!

They are all togeather now. What typical mating behaviors should I be looking for? The one female seems to puff out her gills when she swims around the male and also some tail spasms when they are near eachother.
