Hi Kate
First of welcome to the fourm.
As for your tank, if you want Oscars you need a fair sized tank, for a pair. The absolute minimum size would be 50 Gallons. For a single one it would be fine, for two. you will be pushing it starting out. I have two full grown ones in a 50 gallon tank, and it takes a fair amount of "work" to make sure the water quality is healthy for the fish. So if you want oscars go big tanks. Now if that sounds like too much, you can always look at Convicks. They are pretty easy but can turn into breeding machines, so be warned. Or if your looking for colours you might want to look at some africans. Go to a good fish store, not the local Walmart etc, check out the tanks, and see for yourself.
As for my favorites, well O's are #1, then it would be JD's followed by Red Devels. Sorry it too so long for you to get a reply, the forums a bit slow these days, but there is a wealth of fish keeping knowledge here.
