Hi, can I have the following fish in a 300 gallon aquarium if I have 2 airators, 2 power filters and change 1/3 of the water every 3 weeks?
3 oscars different color forms
1 bala shark
1 large tilapia
1 black shark
1 silver catfish
1 other big type catfish
1 distichodus
1 leporinus fasiatus
1 tinfoil barb

All fish get big. Thank you Bob R Ripon, CA

Hi cacti,

Seems like a hard one....some of those fish grow big, but some grow big fast and some slowly. You'll probably be ok for a while, I guess you can get rid of some if later on it gets problematic....

2 power filters?
I'm gonna be honest here and say that....that tank needs way more filteration.
The most a power filter can pump is 440gph at least thats the most ive ever seen a power filter pump(aquaclear500).
W/ fish that big they will make a mess. Here is my rule for filteration for carnivorious or dirty fish.
10-12 times per hour is how many times you'll want your water turning over.
Which in your tank would be 3000-3600gph. So two power filters therefore wont do the job. I would say you'll need two really good wet/dry's and a couple fluval 404's. And two power heads to keep the water moving. I'm sure about now you are thinking OMG that is gonna cost a lot of [B]$[/B} well you're kinda right. That's 1/2 the reason i dont currently own a 300 gal tank. But I can try to make it cheaper:
order from big al's
http://www.bigalsonline.com/

Also did you ever think that changing 1/3 of the water that is 100 gal. of water!!!! You may want to do a 10% once a week instead.

You may want to invest in a python water changer which hooks up to the sink. and you can drain and fill straight through the sink. You can order this fairly cheaop from big al's.

I would change 25% of the water once a week and increase your filtration system.
