Help with my sick Electric Yellow African Cichlid

Postby wcts17 on Fri Jun 13, 2008 7:58 am

:sad1: Can someone help me identify the sickness that my Cichlid has, so I will know what to do and how to treat him. See pictures. I just noticed it so I'm not sure how long it's been like this.
Thanks in advance for all your help, Wanda

Never had electric yellows so don't really know how bloated they get with dropsy etc....all I can say is for treatment I would move immediately to a small tank with COMPLETELY new water, nothing from the old tank, and treat with antibiotics and anti-parasites, and salt. (And keep the water crystal clean, very well oxygenated, as perfect water parameters as possible...)

Thanks for the advise. I did change 50% of the water Thursday night, added aquarium salt, cichlid essential, Stress coat and Melafix. I guess it was a little to late, when I came in around 8:00 I found that he didn't make it. I guess I'll continue to add the melafix for 7 days just to prevent something else happening. In hopes that will help if something else is going on in the tank.
Blessings,
Wanda

My water conditions are as follows:
Nitrate 20
Nitrite 3
Hardness 150
Chlorine 0
Alkalinity 40
pH 6.8 I've added Ph up to bring the pH up.
Ammonia 6.0 when I did the water change Thursday I didn't clean the filter, I have a canister filter and will do that today in hopes of reducing the ammonia.

Sorry to hear about that, but yes I agree on trying to get tank in as good condition as possible to protect anything else in it, if there's not too many you can even dip the rest in medication tank for a bit while doing an overhaul of original tank since there's always a risk for the other fish....(as always, water changes will help get nitrates down...), hope the rest will be ok, good luck

I had 2 of the Electric Yellow and the other one is fine and the rest of the fish in that tank are fine so hopefully I can get the tank straighten out before any of the others get sick. I love my fish, I have 9 tanks, 7 fresh water and 2 salt water. I have 2 Jewels that keep having babies so I had bought a 5 gallon to put the fry in then one thing lead to another and I now have one 75, 55, 29, 20, 10 and two 5 gallon fresh, one 55 gallon salt and just last week set up a 29 gallon to be a salt water coral.
Thanks for the information, :)
