I'm 40 yards from the river (probally less - can cast to it from my yard) and 10-15 minutes from Lake Erie (one of the great lakes)the lake has plenty of sharkless beaches


You guys can have your oceans and the sharks too

sharks, jellyfish, sea snakes, normal snakes, spiders, half the lizards are poisonous too, fresh and salt water crocs. Love this country. Makes camping exciting!

Ah, lately these summers I wish we had less sun, at least with the ocean breeze it doesn't get to 100 very often, Global Warming or cyclical earth fluctuations or solar intensity/flares increase, whatever it is I don't like it. I like it at 75F just like my oscars!

Yeah but on the run to the beach you have to dodge bullets, machetes, several rivaling gangs, and make sure it's not winter...I hear you get snow?

Snow at the beach? Now that would be a sight! I'd welcome it but none so far unfortunately ....and fortunately none of the flying bullets and machetes either though I hear there are some areas that do have those attractions for those looking for adventure

Well, yea, I could go skiing, but not at the beach it's about a two hour drive inland up the mountain.

Alaska's alright,lived there for a few months but I prefer actual "daylight".

Winter "days" there skip "daytime" more of a morning,dusk ,night cycle .

Yep I lived in Fort Wainwright (Fairbanks) for a few months back when I was in Highschool.

Fishing , hunting ,sightseeing and visiting family

Oportunity to do it all cheap,almost free so couldn't say no

The cool part of limited daylight was the Northern Lights,we see them over Lake Erie (in Ohio) during the winter and people think they're cool but I watched them on some hunting trips in the middle of nowhere with no city's or lights around, nothing but snow far as you could see and they were a lot better,faster, brighter and more colorful
Unfortunately they don't show up to well on tape or film

Yes their summer light period runs like morning,day, breif dusk , starts over. Unfortunately I was there in winter, seen video of it in summer 2am was like 9am (as far as light) but WOW the bugs

How did you try to take the pictures, with decent camera? I think you need a Tripod so there's absolutely no movement, then you could try long exposure time, ie slow shutter so that the light is absorbed in better....best use wide/large aperture ie the lower f-stop number....maybe iso 400 and like 10 seconds exposure depending on aperture size...

tried a few ways at takeing pictures with a few different digital and film camera's.

Then I gave up and bought a movie
In that movie they explain the northern lights only show up "good" on some odd hard to find specialty polarized (forgot the exact words) lens

Yea but you need expensive lenses to do it with quicker exposure. I guess you can use like a higher ISO which will give you more sensitivity but depending on the camera, sometimes it can result in a grainy image with a high ISO, ie over 400, like 800 or more. If you have a wide angle "sharp" quality lens with a very wide/large aperture (unfortunately this costs $$$) then you could probably get a nice picture with a shorter exposure time so you can capture more details without the blurring. And yea, the "pros" have some tricks as to the 'angle' they shoot at etc...I don't think you need any polarizing filter but you could probably come up with some interesting effects. I haven't bought a replacement since my Rebel XTi got stolen so no pictures lately, and the trees, flowers and fields are blooming in full pose for some nice shots

Got the first bloom here in my yard today and saw the years first frog while rakeing up some leaves.

Now early next week we've got a chance of snow

I've only ever seen snow once....It was more like slush, and it took me 3 hours to make a snowman 2 feet high. Tried skiing but the snow wasn't thick enough.
