Newbie Intro

Postby Kat on Sun Apr 06, 2008 6:35 pm

Hi All~

I found this site on my way to another Cichlid forum ... I'm looking for information about Convicts because I just brought them home and know nothing about them. I understand that this forum is targeting Oscars, which I have kept in the past, but I'm just popping in ... hoping to run into some good advice about Cichlids and Convicts.

Hi and welcome to cichlidfish forums!
(let us know if you have any problems posting pictures etc...)
We might be a bit oscar crazy but we're into them all, after-all its "cichlidfish.com" not "oscarsfishtank.com" ;) (hint of the direction of the other domain...also ours...)

(Also, don't forget to post your convict questions in the cichlid section, its right under the oscar forum, http://www.cichlidfish.com/cichlids-f5.html)

Are you new to the hobby or not new to fish but new to cichlids?

Been keeping freshwater tanks for over 40 years - just new to the cichlid family, except for the oscars. I fell in love with them, but they were so destructive in the tank that it always looked like crap. Thought I'd go with something smaller so the tank would be more appealing to the eye. I'm discovering the cichlids have all got personality and intelligence, so I'm starting to get hooked. Currently in the process of researching some of the other breeds to determine what to stock. Just reading the discussion threads has been enlightening and amusing, and has given me some direction in research and decision-making process.

Thanks for the reply, and you'll probably be hearing more from me in the future. :icon_cat:

Wow, 40 years experience with freshwater tanks, we're honored to have you here! tmbsup
And yea, I agree, oscars are a handful and a tank can likely be made to look much better with smaller cichlids, but there's plenty of smaller ones to choose from :)

Welcome to the forum tmbsup

Not sure what kind of info your looking for.....

But convicts will breed if you give them water ;D

Females are (usually) told apart from males by their orange bellies.

Convicts were last moved to the genus Amatitlania makeing their new/correct scientific name Amatitlania nigrofasciatus .

LoL, I'll have to find a way to disqualify you cuz so far it might win by default ;D I'm hoping to be able to finally send the rest of the emails out so maybe people start getting "the word out", "on the street", "ya know" , n' sees whas' happin' .... (I did mention that you have to actually have 'competitors' to win the money ;D , so more submissions/competitors equals bigger prize)
