LOOKS like a bruse, but is it something else? HELP

Postby waterthoughts on Sat Apr 05, 2008 10:01 am

hello there everyone
my new baby cichlid who i have had for about three weeks now, seems to have a brown bruse on its side.
i am currently treating ich in my tank, and am using the salt + heat treatment, could that produce this infection/burse?
my tank is a 20 gl, and the temp is at 89ish F. theres about 10 T of salt in the tank for the treatment of the ich.
theres plenty of room for him in there since he's only less than an inch long now.
can anyone shred some light on this?
i dont want to do a water change since did one just the other day, and wouldnt want to mess with the treatment im doing.......

PLEASE HELP

THANK YOUUUUU

Hi, Waterthoughts! Sorry to hear you're having a problem. What kind of cichlid are you talking about? Might help us to answer better. You say your temp is about 89? That's probably a little high. Remember, both heat and medications reduce the amount of dissolved oxygen in the water. 82 should be enough to speed up the ich life cycle enough to make the meds effective. I won't quibble over a couple of degrees, but 89 is high. Also -- is this a new tank setup, or has it been running for awhile?

hey
i was told by many others that my temp is good for the heat and salt treatment of ich. i have tried it at lower heats and it didnt work , so this time i just decied to go a bit higher... the tank is not new its been up for almost three months now... if not longer...
the cichlid (fish in question) is a Kenyi.
i think it might some sort of infection, he is acting odd and hiding away, and seems very sad. i added some stress coat to help, but idk what else i can do, if things dont look better in the morning im going to change some water, and do another test.
till then idk. wait it out....

Please make sure to INCREASE the surface water circulation and amount of air pumped through airs-stones etc when you raise temperature, "especially" during treatment. The warmer the water, the less oxygen it can hold, also as you add salt it further diminishes its hold on oxygen so make sure to compensate with an extra air pump and more water circulation. (also make sure water is as pure as possible....that's one reason for dedicated 'medication' tanks with frequent fresh water changes). Is it eating ok?

hey
i should have mentioned in my last post that i do have the water level pretty low so that there is much more air flow from the filter pumping water in, ie a water fall, i could take more water out, but the other fish are compltetly fine....
the fish in question isnt looking good, he seems sad and i dont think he ate much when i first put the food in there, he started moving around a few minutes later so i think he ate a bite or two.... ...
im going to do a water change this morning, and try to clean a bit in there so that its as fresh as possible, but i have to go buy salt fist because after i change the water ill have to add more salt in,,,, so i will see how that goes...

If salt is doing much and you have any reason to suspect possible parasite or fungus etc you may want to try treatment for that also, do try to get it to eat though, just keep the tank clean with new water and try various foods. Hope you see some improvement soon.
