I have seen a few pictures and noticed them mentioned a couple times in these forums, but besides that I am having a very difficult time find much information on these fish. From the pictures of (i forget who posted them)'s aquarium they look very cool and I would like to find out more about them as I am going to be setting up a new 90gal soon and would like to broaden my horizon beyond strictly o's. Anyone with information to be given or advice on finding information would be appreciated!

Cichlasoma synspilum, Red Headed cichlid (Quetzal ?) are very nice, supposedly not as bold as oscars but quite similar, smart etc... males get that 'hump' on the head and get quite big, up to 17 inches. I think they may like some plants etc, slow river/streams brackish water.....females and males look alike, the male gets considerably bigger and develops more vibrant coloring...definitely worth getting..

Joes a little behind the times on the scientific name but the way name changes go I might be behind before I hit submit

Their current valid name is Vieja synspila although most people use Vieja synspilus.

Most of them in the hobby are pond bred in florida or asia from stock that has mixed collection orgins from Mexico or Guatemala but theres a few people breeding decient lines or getting wild fish from time to time.

They aren't as bold as oscars when it comes to begging for food and rushing to the front of the tank.
But with tank mates they are more aggressive. (central americans often are)


Their habitat is rivers , streams and lakes but good luck with adding plants synspilus will often eat them.
