Jack Dempseys can get a lot more colourful than that! Mine is that colour (faded-ish) when it's alone. But when I threw some convicts in he instantly changed to a very dark black with brown stripes and really beautiful pearly spots around his eyes and body.

I suspect that the coloration is related to the dominance of the fish. My Jack is always looking for the oportunity to be the king of the tank and sometimes he seems to be winning the battle and when this happens his colour inmediatly go darker. The body bands appear but when the Red Devil takes the turn and bring him a run in the tank his colour turn faded again. I suspect that the lightness and darkness of the fish is related to that. The red devil measure 6 inches and could be a little more and the Jack very close to 6 inches and the measures are without taking the tail in consideration.
