Strange Behavior

Postby tjwstang on Fri Jan 18, 2008 11:10 pm

I have 2 electric blues, yellow lab and another that looks similar to the blues but has a blue sheen and not dark blue like the others.I just bought one more(not sure what this one is either but when I put the new one in the light blue one would swim close to the new one and vibrate his whole body for 1 or 2 seconds. He did this steady for about the first 20 min after I put the new one in the tank.It was truly funny and just wanted to know if anyone might know what he is doing and why?Anyone?

Ah the joys of fish keeping. lol

Your new fish is a male (atleast in my experience)... but im not sure on the species.

Hes trying to court one of your females.

He'll vibrate for a while, then he'll start chasing and lip wrestling with her, then they generally get down to business a few hours later.

not 100% sure on your circumstance but it sounds exactly like my severums when their "in the mood"

Best of luck with it. You'll be flooded with babies in no time tmbsup

Interesting that U can buy fish but not find out what they are... NOT good to place in more than ONE blue species per tank. They wil cross spawn and then U have unpure species as in HYBRIDS in the tank.. NOT good.
The one shaking is a male.. not sure on the new one, as I have seen males shake at other males to let them know who is boss.. This is also a mating shake to intice the female to spawn.. Pure Light  to med blue cichlids are mostly Colbalt Zebras. They start out dark blue, NOT shinny like your E. blue, and turn to a nice lighter cobalt blue at adult.. See pics.. U need to post us some pictures so we can see what U have..

the lt blue one is the domanate male, the one behind him is a young male/female.. That head pic is from a blue moorii dolphin..

Sounds to me like a dominance thing being a mildy aggressive cichlid. Then again what cichlid isn't aggressive. I'm trying to think of species that could be mistaken for electric blues. Perhaps some hongii, blue dolphins, blue acara, perhaps auratus when pale in colour. virginalis I think but I may be confusing species. There's a couple others that I've come across which I've had difficulty identifying but I can't remember them off the top of my head.

check for small things like eye size, mouth size, position of fins, shape of the nuchal (head lumps etc), and shapes of fins. Check the anal fin for egg spots, look at the edge of the fins for a rim colouring. lots of small things make the difference between one species and the next. I have trouble with juvenile jack dempsy and blue acara sometimes. only difference is the blues have more freckles than the jacks and they are slightly darker in colour with a more defined dark line down them. Maybe. Haha.
