i was thinking about replacing the gravel in my tank with sand i know that the Oscar sometimes like to dig in the gravel, are the going to be OK with the sand

Some people like sand a lot -- others don't like it.  Takes a bit more vac work to keep it looking good.  You want to be a little careful that it doesn't get sucked into your filter and damage the inner workings.  Does look reaaly good though, if you can keep up with it.  There are lots of different types, not all of which are great.  Something farily coarse, like play sand, is probably OK.
