Oscar breeding

Postby rwood on Sat Jul 28, 2007 12:40 pm

I have a 10 inch, and a 12 inch oscar, showing breeding signs. I have them in a 55gallon tank by themselves, for the last week. The male shows more signs than the female. I fed them today, 7/28/07, they did not eat, and usually they practically jump out of the tank to eat. Anyone who has sucessfully bred oscars, ant advise on how long it took, and what to expect, would be greatly appreciated.

Are you sure they are starting to breed, or fight.  They will if the tank is too small.  They also like to have a flat rock in the tank to lay the eggs on.  There is no real set time for breeding, it's when ever they feel like it.  You'll notice alot of head twitching and rock cleaning.  Some times if you do a big water change and raise the temp to about 80 it can trigger them to go for it.  Good luck.....

Imagine a 10 and a 12 inch oscar in a 55 gallon w/ the millions of little babies they could have? I don't think they'd be very happy.

Mine started showing all the breeding signs when they were about 6 inches. Tail shaking, mouth locking, head twitching and they were constantly above their piece of slate. They were in a 55 gallon.

I got them into a 150 gallon tank and they could care less about each other. The only time they interact is to chase each other off their sides of the tank.

So mine were just fighting, they didn't have enough room. I felt bad for them being 6 inches in a 55 gallon. You should wait until you get them into a bigger tank, and then see what happens.
