Lump suddenly appeared on Texas Cichlid Head

Postby stacynewton on Thu May 24, 2007 5:16 pm

Hi,
I've had a Texas Cichlid for about a year and a half, maybe nearly 2 years.
He's always been very healthy but recently over only a few days he's developed a 'lump' in the middle of his head.

He's in a 100g tank with 2 Oscars and 2 plecs. The ph is about 7.5, the ammonia 0ppm, the nitrite about 0ppm and the nitrate about 10-15ppm.
I've heard that males can have a lump on their heads but this has appeared over recently over about a week or so.

Nothing has changed in the tank and the other fish appear fine. The Texas is still feeded and appears healthy apart from the lump.

Hopefully there will be some pictures attached to this mail. Can anyone give me some advice on what this might be and what to do to help him please?

Just a guess, but I'd say it's either a tumor or a severe bacterial infection.  You could try putting him in a hospital tank & treating with a broad-spectrum antibiotic, but if you can afford it, I'd suggest having a vet look at him.  A few phone calls should locate a vet in your area who treats fish.  Good luck, and let us know how it goes.

Thanks for the advice.
Set up a hospital tank and treating as suggested.

Early days yet - will post again later.

Thanks.
