Any number of reasons possible, but with the little information you have given us the most likely answer is simply that he needs a hiding place. Many cichlids like caves, overturned flower pots, things like that where they can duck into and hide. It's just their nature. If your water conditions are good, and the aquarium is large enuff for your specific Cichlid, I'm thinking that the addition of an overturned flowerpot will do wonders!
