The only accurate way is to vent them.

Ways to get decient guess's
males grow faster
males are more aggressive (usually)
Male usually have more pointed fins while females usually have rounded fin tips.

Or allow them to grow. Males will develop a forehead hump, and in my experience RD growth is very, very fast. Barnes, my current personality-filled RD, has gone from 1-1/2 inches to 4-1/2 in only three months!

Males will develop a forehead hump,

With many fish in the devil/midas complex don't bet on that.
Often it can work out that way but nauchal humps can be on any dominate fish even females ,same in reverse.

Many sold through LFS are also devil X midas hybrids, which changes the features, along with many  that are hormone treated on farms in asia.

Check out Rapps fresh imports, some amazing male red devils - most lack nauchal humps even at 8"+

Or here's a few shots
my hump headed female

hump headed male I grew out

his brother a year older (year later) he was the more dominate male of the brothers but lived with the dominate female I posted first.

All three  fish in those pictures bred (two still are),so they're sexes are 100% certain.
