how do i soften my water to suit my oscars and JDs. right now mine varies from hard to very hard.

Skeptical Aquarist has a good artical on the subject at the above link. However, in my experience, Dempseys and Oscars adjust readily to any reasonable pH as long as there are no sudden changes. You may not need to soften your water unless it's coming out of the tap as solid metal
