red devil x blood parrot?

Getting them to tango...

red devil x blood parrot?

Postby junior on Mon Jan 29, 2007 9:16 pm

Ok so this has been driving me nuts. About 2 weeks ago I lost all my SA cichlids(bad sitaution), so I have been watching for large cichlids at the local fish store I work at. Well the other day someone brings in a good looking red devil. My boss procedes to put this devil in with one of our LARGE blood parrots. Well as the week progressed they started to court each other, the female being the blood parrot. Now the male had clean out one side of the tank and they were looking like there were going to breed. Well I decided to buy the red devil to try to pair it with one I already have. Well that isn't going to well but I can't get the thought of that blood parrot. Is this a possible cross? I know the males are supposed to be sterile but if the parrot is the female can this occur? If there is a possiblilty I will be buying that parrot first thing in the morning but if I am just going to watch the court and nothing comes of it I will be rightly irriated. My boss charges way to much and really don't want to waste the cash if there is no likely hood of breeding possibly happening.

thanks
JR

Hey junior

Good to see you around. As for the red devil, and the blood parrot, I think I read something about it, that
yes the male RD can breed with a female parrot. However I could be wrong, and mixing it up with another fish
in my head. Jeremy probably knows for sure, Dan might too. Maybe drop them Pm's directly and ask em.

Well I have read about them with convicts but not with red devils. I would like to try this but I just want to be sure that there is a chance I may get viable young.

I haven't been here for a while but surely we aren't promoting hybrids here?

I gave my daughter a rollicking after she bought a parrot thinking 'it was cute', later she looked at my firemouths and wished she had them (tough luck).  Pleae don't even consider hybrids and as a 'senior member' surely talk of such shouldn't even be considered?

Missed this thread before.

but, here's some truth and info on "blood parrots"

surely we aren't promoting hybrids here?

Not all of us ,anyways  :boxing:

Is this a possible cross?

Well I have read about them with convicts but not with red devils.

in order - here's a fast run down of the mess
devil or midas (or hybrid of both)  X severum = "blood parrot"**Usually the dark ones are from green severum, the orange(r) ones are from gold severum** lots of people dispute that but a few florida farmers had large parrot setups years ago and thats the two fish they had crossing.
devil or midas (or hybrid of both sometimes synspilum or other fish is in the mix also)  X blood parrot = "king kong blood parrot"
"blood parrot" X convict = "jellybean parrot" they are not chemically striped of color or stunted by chemicals like some people claim. They're just further hybridized.

All the forms come in dyed, yeah the same process everone tries to ban in other fish is most common in "blood parrots".

Then the ultra mess, scam aka the heart or love parrot = tailless parrot, that some people claim to breed <-- the tails are cut off it's been proven and shown over and over! And acknowledged by Ornamental Fish International.

The "show blood parrots" according to Ornamental Fish International are made  :pain10: by putting rubberbands on young fish to misshape their heads  :BangHead:

The "new" striped blood parrots are lazer dyed or tattooed, they're not genetically colored even though they're sold as real color phases -acknowledged by Ornamental Fish International.

all in all a mess scamming on the parrot cichlid name.

I would like to try this but I just want to be sure that there is a chance I may get viable young.

"viable. ... [adjective] capable of life or normal growth and development"
They'll live but "viable"? Think that one over.

there are fully healthy young from em

a fish breed/hybrid that can't swim right , has genetic swim bladder issues, genetic spine curvature, genetically has it's organs smashed and has a deformed mouth doesn't seem to fit the definition of "healthy" but good luck with the fry.

surely we aren't promoting hybrids here?

Again not me!
Cut off tails , cruely smashed heads , genetic disorders, made up names I'll pass!
Theres over 3,000 types  of non-mutant cichlids out there,if theres a reason why someone can't find one they like , switch to ant farms.
