my first oscar

I'm planning on getting an oscar,  with a 75gal tank, penguin powerfilter and subersible heater.
would this be a suitable environment for an oscar?  :tongue8:

Hi, Samanthia, and welcome!

Your description above sounds like it would work fine.  You mention a Penguin filter -- which model?  Here's a link you might like to look at:

Do you already have fish, or is this your first venture?

I have a 10 gal. with one guppy in it, a 20 long with 2 congos, 2 rainbows, 3 Harlequins, and 2 leopard danios.  I also have a 55 that I'm cycling for a community tank.  This will be my first cichlid.  I think a penguin 350 would work.

Very nice collection!  The 350 should work fine, at least for awhile, if you're really good with your feeding and water changing.  My personal experience is that more is better, at least up to a point.  Oscars are very heavy-bodied fish, and very  messy eaters.  Sometimes it can seem like they're spitting out more than they swallow.  I have come to the practice of using two filters on my cichlid-bearing 55's.  One combination I use and like is the Penguin 350 along with an Eheim 2213.  There are of course other good, choices -- you could even use two of the 350's.  The single Penguin should certainly work fine to start with, but as your O grows, be prepared to re-evaluate whether you might need to add another.

Good luck with your Oscar.  They're really great pets!

o1o2o3, I would take most if not all the gravel out of the 10 gal. it displaces water so the tank doesn't hold as much as is advertised.  Also, the gravel will collect wastes quickly.
