I have had a 55 gallon tank for over 12 years, and decided to keep only cichlids about a year ago.  I have been told that I shouldn't put South American cichlids together with African cichlids.  Also, how do I know which ones I have.  I believe that I have the African cichlids

Hi, Taters, and welcome to the forum!  The advice to keep African and American cichlids separate is a good general rule, but exceptions are certainly possible.  Do you know the common names of the fish you now have?  If not, can you post pictures of them?

The younger the fish are when you first get them,  the better chances you'll have of them getting along when they mature.
