I have never tried breeding our fish and need info on determing the sex of our ciclids. My main tank is 150 gallon with many aggressive fish. I already have a smaller 5 gallon tank ready but I have no clue to determaine the sex. Another question how long do I leave the female and male in the tank???

What kind of cichlids?
Someone will be able to help you if you can narrow it down.

hmmm I believe my husband said they are african cichlids.....if that helps

I see a few different species of africans - it's really best not to even try breeding mixed species/hybrids. Some may cross but I couldn't tell you which ones.


Also see angelfish (south american cichlids) , luckily they won't cross with africans but angels and africans almost never mix long term - attitude , temperature , food type and water chemestry requierments are totally different from each other.

To increase the chances of a successful breeding your mbuna AND minimize the potential of creating hybrids, you'll probably want 1 male per 2 to 3+ females per species.

To just accomplish a successful breeding you'll require 1 male, 1 receptive female and water 

The red zebra in the second photo appears to be a male. Is the red zebra in the first pic the same fish?

They're capable of breeding as soon as they attain 2" (though most often they're larger when they begin to produce fry on a regular basis).  Without both genders per species, any fry produced will be hybrids.

green terrors can cross breed with other cichlids. they are one of the few if not only that south american, central etc. doesn't mean a thing to them.
